History
SOM, Inc. was organized in October 2006 in Decatur, GA. Penny Ellis, Kathyrn Cole and Toni Jacob saw the need for a woman-s mission organization which would utilize the gifts and strengths of the African American church with the goal of involving more individuals and churches in local, national and international missions. They were later joined by Judy Hollis and Maudriella Mason.
The first SOM SUMMIT was held on January 26, 2007 at Peace Baptist Church (Decatur, GA). Approximately 250 persons attended (women, men, youth and children), representing 30 churches from three states. The mission offering was divided equally between The Stewart Center (Atlanta, GA), Nannie Helen Burroughs School Elementary School (Washington, D. C.) and Simons Branch (South Africa).
On June 13 - 17, 2007, SOM and African American Fellowship, GBC sponsored a mission trip to New Orleans. One hundred and twenty (120) volunteers (ages 6 - 76) representing eight churches traveled to New Orleans, LA to assist with rebuilding lives, homes, and churches. SOM continues to sponsor an annual mission trip.
